Privacy Policy
Effective date: 1 September 2026
This policy describes how FREEPTT, operated by Jason Writtenhouse (“we”), handles information for the Android apps distributed on Google Play and for this website:
- Network Radio (
net.writtenhouse.android.pttclient) - FREEPTT for Android (
net.writtenhouse.android.ptttouch) - this website
It is written to meet Google Play’s User Data policy and reflects what the apps do today. You do not need an account, email address, or password to use the apps.
Who processes your data
The apps connect to a PTT server you choose: the vendor-operated public network, a licensed operator, or a server you or your organization host. That server’s operator processes connection and routing data for the session. Self-hosted and operator networks are not under our control; those operators are responsible for their own practices.
Information the apps process
Used only to operate push-to-talk:
- Microphone audio — captured when you transmit. Private and encrypted group calls are end-to-end encrypted; we do not hold keys that can decrypt that audio. Open group channels are not encrypted; anyone on the channel, and the server that routes it, can hear the audio.
- Camera — used on the device to scan QR codes for server or configuration import. We do not upload photos or video from the camera.
- Device identity — cryptographic keys generated on the device. Your Device Numeric
Identity (DNI) is derived from a public key. It is not your name, email, or phone number. Public keys,
and (when enrollment runs) a certificate request identifying the device as
device-<id>, are sent to the server or enrollment service so the device can authenticate. - Device and app info — manufacturer, model, and app version, sent at connect so the server can support the device.
- Network data — IP address and ports, necessary to maintain TCP/UDP sessions and relay media.
- Messages — in-app text and similar messages. Device-to-device messages are encrypted. Email gateway messages (when that feature is used) are sent in plaintext through the operator’s email provider.
- In-app contacts and settings — nicknames and labels you store for DNIs and groups, plus preferences, kept on the device. The apps do not read your Android address book.
- Channel activity — which talkgroups you join and routing metadata needed to deliver voice and messages.
FREEPTT for Android may request notification permission to alert you of incoming calls and messages. Network Radio may, if you choose, pass a VPN profile to OpenVPN for Android.
What we do not collect
The apps do not use advertising, advertising IDs, analytics SDKs, or crash-reporting SDKs. They do not request location. Android backup of app data is disabled.
How we use information
To provide PTT: authenticate the device, route voice and messages, and keep the session alive. We do not sell personal information. We do not use app data for advertising.
Sharing
- Other users on a channel receive what that channel is designed to carry (voice, and messages you send them).
- The PTT server you connect to receives the connection, identity, and routing data listed above.
- Email (when used) is handled by the operator’s email provider (for example Amazon SES).
- On devices with Google Play Services, the apps may install a security provider used for TLS. That is not used for ads or analytics.
Security
Connections use TLS. The apps also perform a second, application-layer mutual authentication so the device can verify the server and the server can verify the device. Encrypted calls use per-transmission keys; open channels do not encrypt audio content. See Security for a technical summary.
Retention and deletion
There is no user account to delete. Uninstalling the app removes local keys, messages, and contacts from the device. Servers keep only what they need to operate the network (for example routing state and queued messages, which expire). If you used our public network and want server-side data associated with your DNI removed, email privacy@freeptt.net and include the DNI.
Children
The apps are not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
